Orange Juice – …Coals to Newcastle (6CD Box Set) (2010) [FLAC]
flac – lossless | 2.62 GB | Pop

When the Scottish pop band Orange Juice split up in January of 1985, it didn’t seem too likely that they would become one of the more influential bands of the era. Yes, their early singles on the tiny Postcard label generated some excitement, and they had a bona fide chart hit with the 1983’s single “Rip It Up,” but their career had mostly come to a sputtering halt outside the lens of the public eye. One short year later, with the rise of C-86 and the early indie pop bands, the brightly scrappy attitude and scruffily melodic sound of early Orange Juice suddenly became popular again. Fast forward to the mid-’90s and Belle & Sebastian, then Franz Ferdinand and more, to see that the Orange Juice legacy lives on as strongly as ever. The songs of Edwyn Collins (and those of James Kirk) have been required listening for a large number of great pop bands. Thanks to the release of 2005’s The Glasgow School, which made all the band’s early recordings widely available for the first time, even more bands were able to draw inspiration from the band and their sound. In 2010, all the band’s recorded output was finally made easily accessible.

Put together in part by Edwyn Collins, the box set …Coals to Newcastle is beautiful to look at, wonderful to listen to, and basically a dream come true for Orange Juice fans who weren’t able to get a hold of the original albums or the Japanese CD reissues. Even if you did own either of those, Coals is still worth seeking out for all the extras. The six-CD/one-DVD set contains all of the band’s recorded output: the early singles, the three studio albums, the Texas Fever EP, a full complement of B-sides, a handful of demos and different mixes, a disc of BBC sessions, two videos, live footage from the Old Grey Whistle Test, and a very ’80s concert video (Dada with the Juice) that the final incarnation of the band made. The Glasgow School is included as the first disc, and it’s still amazing to hear all the singles and demos cut in that short period of time (between 1980 and 1981) all strung together. Songs like “Blue Boy,” “Falling and Laughing,” and “Lovesick” bubble and pop in a brilliant mix of wise-ass punk and off-kilter disco, at once creating and defining a new kind of pop. The joy and energy that radiate from these tracks is life-affirming. While common wisdom states that the Postcard singles were the artistic high point of the band, the three albums and EP that the revamped (and shifting) band produced are perfectly good, even sometimes great. In fact, you’d be hard pressed to find a better early-’80s pop album that their debut, You Can’t Hide Your Love Forever. Hearing the discs one after the other with all the assorted B-sides, live cuts, and spare tracks, you can see that the progression the band makes from lo-fi kids thrashing about in the studio to polished pros working with esteemed reggae producer Dennis Bovell does nothing to detract from the humanity and soul in the songs, and especially in the voice and vision of Edwyn Collins. Add to these discs the uniformly excellent BBC sessions, and you have a full picture of one of the most important — and enjoyable — groups of the modern pop era. …Coals to Newcastle is everything an Orange Juice fan could have hoped for and a simply thrilling example of how to put together a box set.

Genre: Blues Rock

This ten-album, must-have set includes ZZ Top’s acclaimed albums: ZZ Top’s First Album, Rio Grande Mud, Tres Hombres, Fandango!, Tejas, Deguello, El Loco, Eliminator, Afterburner and Recycler.

This sturdy American blues-rock trio from Texas consists of Billy Gibbons (guitar), Dusty Hill (bass), and Frank Beard (drums). They were formed in 1970 in and around Houston from rival bands the Moving Sidewalks (Gibbons) and American Blues (Hill and Beard). Their first two albums reflected the strong blues roots and Texas humor of the band. Their third album (Tres Hombres) gained them national attention with the hit “La Grange,” a signature riff tune to this day, based on John Lee Hooker’s “Boogie Chillen.” Their success continued unabated throughout the ’70s, culminating with the year-and-a-half-long Worldwide Texas Tour.
Exhausted from the overwhelming workload, they took a three-year break, then switched labels and returned to form with Deguello and El Loco, both harbingers of what was to come. By their next album, Eliminator, and its worldwide smash follow-up, Afterburner, they had successfully harnessed the potential of synthesizers to their patented grungy blues groove, giving their material a more contemporary edge while retaining their patented Texas style. Now sporting long beards, golf hats, and boiler suits, they met the emerging video age head-on, reducing their “message” to simple iconography. Becoming even more popular in the long run, they moved with the times while simultaneously bucking every trend that crossed their path. As genuine roots musicians, they have few peers; Gibbons is one of America’s finest blues guitarists working in the arena rock idiom — both influenced by the originators of the form and British blues-rock guitarists like Peter Green — while Hill and Beard provide the ultimate rhythm section support…

ZZ Top’s First Album may not be perfectly polished, but it does establish their sound, attitude, and quirks. Simply put, it’s a dirty little blues-rock record, filled with fuzzy guitars, barrelhouse rhythms, dirty jokes, and Texan slang. They have a good, ballsy sound that hits at gut level, and if the record’s not entirely satisfying, it’s because they’re still learning how to craft records — which means that they’re still learning pacing as much as they’re learning how to assemble a set of indelible material. Too much of this record glides by on its sound, without offering any true substance, but the tracks that really work — “(Somebody Else Been) Shaking Your Tree,” “Backdoor Love Affair,” “Brown Sugar,” and “Goin’ Down to Mexico,” among them — show that from their very first record on, ZZ Top was that lil’ ol’ blues band from Texas.

Tracklist:
01 – (Somebody Else Been) Shaking Your Tree
02 – Brown Sugar
03 – Squank
04 – Goin’ Down To Mexico
05 – Old Man
06 – Neighbor, Neighbor
07 – Certified Blues
08 – Bedroom Thang
09 – Just Got Back From Baby’s
10 – Backdoor Love Affair

ZZ Top – Rio Grande Mud (1972/2013)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz | Time – 39:04 minutes | 1,47 GB
Official Digital Download – Source: | Front cover

With their second album, Rio Grande Mud, ZZ Top uses the sound they sketched out on their debut as a blueprint, yet they tweak it in slight but important ways. The first difference is the heavier, more powerful sound, turning the boogie guitars into a locomotive force. There are slight production flares that date this as a 1972 record, but for the most part, this is a straight-ahead, dirty blues-rock difference. Essentially like the first album, then. That’s where the second difference comes in — they have a much better set of songs this time around, highlighted by the swaggering shuffle “Just Got Paid,” the pile-driving boogie “Bar-B-Q,” the slide guitar workout “Apologies to Pearly,” and two Dusty Hill-sung numbers, “Francine” and “Chevrolet.” There are still a couple of tracks that don’t quite gel and their fuzz-blues still can sound a little one-dimensional at times, but Rio Grande Mud is the first flowering of ZZ Top as a great, down-n-dirty blooze rock band.

Tracklist:
01 – Francine
02 – Just Got Paid
03 – Mushmouth Shoutin’
04 – Ko Ko Blue
05 – Chevrolet
06 – Apologies To Pearly
07 – Bar-B-Q
08 – Sure Got Cold After The Rain Fell
09 – Whiskey’n Mama
10 – Down Brownie

ZZ Top – Tres Hombres (1973/2013)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz | Time – 33:30 minutes | 1,16 GB
Official Digital Download – Source: | Front cover

Tres Hombres is the record that brought ZZ Top their first Top Ten record, making them stars in the process. It couldn’t have happened to a better record. ZZ Top finally got their low-down, cheerfully sleazy blooze-n-boogie right on this, their third album. As their sound gelled, producer Bill Ham discovered how to record the trio so simply that they sound indestructible, and the group brought the best set of songs they’d ever have to the table. On the surface, there’s nothing really special about the record, since it’s just a driving blues-rock album from a Texas bar band, but that’s what’s special about it. It has a filthy groove and an infectious feel, thanks to Billy Gibbons’ growling guitars and the steady propulsion of Dusty Hill and Frank Beard’s rhythm section. They get the blend of bluesy shuffles, gut-bucket rocking, and off-beat humor just right. ZZ Top’s very identity comes from this earthy sound and songs as utterly infectious as “Waitin’ for the Bus,” “Jesus Just Left Chicago,” “Move Me on Down the Line,” and the John Lee Hooker boogie “La Grange.” In a sense, they kept trying to remake this record from this point on — what is Eliminator if not Tres Hombres with sequencers and synthesizers? — but they never got it better than they did here.

Tracklist:
01 – Waitin’ For The Bus
02 – Jesus Just Left Chicago
03 – Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers
04 – Master Of Sparks
05 – Hot, Blue And Righteous
06 – Move Me On Down The Line
07 – Precious And Grace
08 – La Grange
09 – Shiek
10 – Have You Heard?

ZZ Top – Fandango (1975/2013)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz | Time – 34:03 minutes | 1,27 GB
Official Digital Download – Source: | Front cover

Blessed with their first full-fledged hit album, ZZ Top followed it up with Fandango!, a record split between a side of live tracks and a side of new studio cuts. In a way, this might have made sense, since they were a kick-ass live band, and they do sound good here, but it’s hard not to see this as a bit of a wasted opportunity in retrospect. Why? Because the studio side is a worthy successor to the all-fine Tres Hombres, driven by “Tush” and “Heard It on the X,” two of their greatest songs that build on that album by consolidating their sound and amplifying their humor. If they had sustained this energy and quality throughout a full studio album, it would have been their greatest, but instead the mood is broken by the live cuts. Now, these are really good live cuts — and “Backdoor Medley” and “Jailhouse Rock” were fine interpretations, making familiar songs sound utterly comfortable in their signature sound — and Fandango! remains one of their better albums, but it’s hard not to think that it could have been even better.

Tracklist:
01 – Thunderbird
02 – Jailhouse Rock
03 – Backdoor Medley: Backdoor Love Affair / Mellow Down Easy / Backdoor Love Affair #2 / Long Distance Boogie
04 – Nasty Dogs And Funky Kings
05 – Blue Jean Blues
06 – Balinese
07 – Mexican Blackbird
08 – Heard In On The X
09 – Tush

ZZ Top – Tejas (1976/2013)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz | Time – 34:55 minutes | 1,27 GB
Official Digital Download – Source: | Front cover

ZZ Top was riding high in the mid-’70s on the strength of Tres Hombres and Fandango, but they were starting to run out of steam by 1977′s Tejas. Its predecessor was padded with a live side, but even if it was close to padding, it was still enjoyable. Tejas, despite sounding pretty good, is just forgettable. It has the patented, propulsive ZZ boogie, but none of the songs are particularly memorable, even if the whole thing sounds pretty good as it’s playing. ZZ Top and their label, London, must have noticed this too, since even though the album went gold, they followed it months later with The Best of ZZ Top, which contained none of the songs from this album.

Tracklist:
01 – It’s Only Love
02 – Arrested For Driving While Blind
03 – El Diablo
04 – Snappy Kakkie
05 – Enjoy And Get It On
06 – Ten Dollar Man
07 – Pan Am Highway Blues
08 – Avalon Hideaway
09 – She’s A Heartbreaker
10 – Asleep In The Desert (Instr.)

ZZ Top – Degüello (1979/2013)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz | Time – 34:16 minutes | 1,31 GB
Official Digital Download – Source: | Front cover

ZZ Top returned after an extended layoff in late 1979 with Degüello, their best album since 1973′s Tres Hombres. During their time off, ZZ Top didn’t change much — hell, their sound never really changed during their entire career — but it did harden, in a way. The grooves became harder, sleeker, and their off-kilter sensibility and humor began to dominate, as “Cheap Sunglasses” and “Fool for Your Stockings” illustrate. Ironically, this, their wildest album lyrically, doesn’t have the unhinged rawness of their early blooze rockers, but the streamlined production makes it feel sleazier all the same, since its slickness lets the perversity slide forth. And, forget not, the trio is in fine shape here, knocking out a great set of rockers and sounding stylish all the time. Undoubtedly one of their strong suits.

Tracklist:
01 – I Thank You
02 – She Loves My Automobile
03 – I’m Bad, I’m Nationwide
04 – A Fool For Your Stocking
05 – Manic Mechanic
06 – Dust My Broom
07 – Lowdown In The Street
08 – Hi Fi Mama
09 – Cheap Sunglasses
10 – Esther Be The One

ZZ Top – El Loco (1981/2013)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz | Time – 37:23 minutes | 1,41 GB
Official Digital Download – Source: | Front cover

El Loco follows through on the streamlined, jet-engine boogie rock of Degüello, but kicking all the ingredients up a notch. That means that the grooves are getting a little slicker, while the jokes are getting a little sillier, a little raunchier. The double entendres on “Tube Snake Boogie” and “Pearl Necklace” are barely disguised, while much of the record plays as flat-out goofy party rock. Not necessarily a bad thing, but much of it is a little too obvious to be totally winning. Still, the most telling thing about El Loco may be the rhythm of “Pearl Necklace,” its biggest single and best song, which clearly points the way to the new wave blues-rock of Eliminator.

Tracklist:
01 – Tube Snake Boogie
02 – I Wanna Drive You Home
03 – Ten Foot Pole
04 – Leila
05 – Don’t Tease Me
06 – It’s So Hard
07 – Pearl Necklace
08 – Groovy Little Hippie Pad
09 – Heaven, Hell Or Houston
10 – Party On The Patio

ZZ Top – Eliminator (1983/2013)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz | Time – 44:25 minutes | 1,73 GB
Official Digital Download – Source: | Front cover

ZZ Top had reached the top of the charts before, but that didn’t make their sudden popularity in 1983 any more predictable. It wasn’t that they were just popular — they were hip, for God’s sake, since they were one of the only AOR favorites to figure out to harness the stylish, synthesized grooves of new wave, and then figure out how to sell it on MTV. Of course, it helped that they had songs that deserved to be hits. With “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” “Sharp Dressed Man,” and “Legs,” they had their greatest set of singles since the heady days of Tres Hombres, and the songs that surrounded them weren’t bad either — they would have been singles on El Loco, as a matter of fact. The songs alone would have made Eliminator one of ZZ Top’s three greatest albums, but their embrace of synths and sequencers made it a blockbuster hit, since it was the sound of the times. Years later, the sound of the times winds up sounding a bit stiff. It’s still an excellent ZZ Top album, one of their best, yet it sounds like a mechanized ZZ Top thanks to the unflaggingly accurate grooves. Then again, that’s part of the album’s charm — this is new wave blues-rock, glossed up for the video, looking as good as the omnipresent convertible on the cover and sounding as irresistible as Reaganomics. Not the sort the old-school fans or blues-rock purists will love, but ZZ Top never sounded as much like a band of its time as they did here.

Tracklist:
01 – Gimme All You Lovin
02 – Got Me Under Pressure
03 – Sharp Dressed Man
04 – I Need You Tonight
05 – I Got The Six
06 – Legs
07 – Thug
08 – TV Dinners
09 – Dirty Dog
10 – If I Could Only Flag Her Down
11 – Bad Girl

ZZ Top – Afterburner (1985/2013)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 37:32 minutes | 482 MB
Official Digital Download – Source: | Front cover

Well, if you just had your biggest hit ever, you’d probably try to replicate it, too. And if you were praised for being visionary because you played all your blues grooves to a slightly sequenced beat, you’d probably be tempted to not just continue in that direction, but to tighten the sequencer and graft on synthesizers, since it’ll all signal how futuristic you are. While you’re at it, you might visualize how space age this all is by turning your signature car into a space shuttle. If you look at things that way, then Afterburner, ZZ Top’s follow-up to their blockbuster Eliminator, makes sense — they’re just giving the people more of what they want. Problem is, no matter how much you dress ZZ Top up, they’re still ZZ Top. Sometimes they can trick you into thinking they’re a little flashier than usual, but they’re still a lil’ ol’ blues band from Texas, kicking out blues-rockers. And blues-rock just doesn’t kick when it’s synthesized, even if ZZ Top’s grooves always bordered on robotic. So, Afterburner, their most synthetic album, will not please most ZZ Top fans, even if it did go platinum several time over and reached number four. That’s all just a sign of the times, when even hard rock bands had to sound as slick as synth pop, complete with clanging DX-7s and cavernous drums. As an artifact of that time, Afterburner is pretty good — never has a hard rock album sounded so artificial, nor has a nominal blues-rock album sounded so devoid of blues. Apart from the chugging “Sleeping Bag,” not even the singles sound like ZZ Top (though “Dipping Low (In the Lap of Luxury” is a blatant “Gimme All Your Lovin’” rewrite): the terrific post-new wave rocker “Stages” is the poppiest thing they ever cut, the ballad “Rough Boy” is far removed from slow blues, and the full-fledged synth dance of “Velcro Fly” is a true mind-bender. All this means that Afterburner is merely a product of its time — the only record ZZ Top could have made at the time, but it hardly exists out of that time.

Tracklist:
01 – Sleeping Bag
02 – Stages
03 – Woke Up With Wood
04 – Rough Boy
05 – Can’t Stop Rockin’
06 – Planet Of Women
07 – I Got The Message
08 – Velcro Fly
09 – Dipping Low (In The Lap Of Luxury)
10 – Delirious
Please note: this album presented in 44.1kHz/24bit.

ZZ Top – Recycler (1990/2013)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 40:03 minutes | 480 MB
Official Digital Download – Source: | Front cover

The continuation of Eliminator’s synthesized blues boogie made sense on Afterburner, since it arrived two years after its predecessor. ZZ Top’s choice to pursue that direction on Recycler is puzzling, since a full five years separates this from Afterburner. It’s not just that they continue to follow this path; it’s that they embalm it, creating a record that may be marginally ballsier than its predecessor, but lacking the sense of goofy fun and warped ambition that made Afterburner fascinating. Here, there’s just a steady, relentless beat (Frank Beard is still chained to the sequencer, as he has been for a decade), topped off by processed guitars turning out licks that fall short of being true riffs. Put it this way, apart from “Doubleback,” a continuation of the arena pop of “Stages,” the other number that really works here is “My Head’s in Mississippi,” the closest they’d come to the greasy boogie of “La Grange” since Degüello. When it arrives halfway through Recycler, it not only sounds refreshing; it puts the rest of the album in perspective, showing how tired the once-bracing synth-blooze-boogie has become. And the worst thing about it all, it doesn’t seem like the band realizes how uncomfortably ironic the title of Recycler is.

Tracklist:
01 – Concrete And Steel
02 – Lovething
03 – Penthouse Eyes
04 – Tell It
05 – My Head’s In Mississippi
06 – Decision Or Collision
07 – Give It Up
08 – 2000 Blues
09 – Burger Man
10 – Doubleback

Please note: this album presented in 44.1kHz/24bit.

The title of this bonus-track-rich, 10-disc chronicle of Robert Plant’s post-Led Zeppelin career refers not only to the number of solo albums the singer has released since Zep flamed out in 1980, but also his penchant for stubborn endurance and artistic reinvention in the face of time and the tides of fashion. While both Plant and Jimmy Page have never been able to fully escape the lengthy shadows of their original world-beating collaboration, it’s the vocalist who’s best–if irregularly–tempered, teased, and folded Zep’s legacy into his mercurial solo career, with his 1982 debut Pictures at Eleven and 1988′s Now & Zen being the most overt about it. More crucial to Plant’s restless muse has been a willingness to move beyond Led Zeppelin, whether successfully casting a more structured set of songs in synth-drenched new wave veneer on “Principle of Moments” (supplemented here by the previously unreleased “Turnaround” and three live cuts, including an unlikely cover of Bob Marley’s “Lively Up Yourself”), revisiting a wide swath of influential roots on the Honeydrippers EP and his first release with contemporary backing band Strange Sensation on 2002′s Dreamland, or the symphonic ambitions of Manic Nirvana and multihued folk retrenchment of Fate of Nations. Enhanced by 26 bonus tracks of outtakes, demos, live cuts, and remixes, the nine albums anthologized here are also covered in an insightful essay by journalist Ed Vulliamy. The set’s bonus DVD contains an hour-long retrospective hosted by Plant himself and features rare film clips and comments from many of his collaborators and admirers, as well as 20 career-spanning solo videos. –Jerry McCulley

Eagles – Catalogue CD Album Box (2005 Limited Edition) [FLAC]
flac – lossless | 2.13 GB | Rock

Greater than a hand-plucked menagerie of hits and outtakes, this box set is just that—a complete set of the six studio (and one live) albums, in their originally sequenced entirety, recorded during the 1970s decade in which the Eagles helped define. The nine-CD collection plays chronologically, beginning with the folk-rock pace and Everly Brothers harmonies of the 1972 self-titled debut (“Take It Easy,” “Witchy Woman,” “Peaceful Easy Feeling”) and the 1973 Western concept album, Desperado (“Tequila Sunrise,” “Desperado”). Don Henley and Glenn Frey added guitarist Don Felder as the band steered in a rock direction for 1974’s On the Border (“Already Gone,” “James Dean”) and toward a polished, FM-ready sound for 1975’s One Of These Nights (“Take it to the Limit,” “Lyin’ Eyes”) before guitarist Joe Walsh joined as the Eagles reached their mainstream apex in 1976 with Hotel California (“New Kid In Town,” “Life in the Fast Lane,” “Hotel California”). While The Long Run in 1979 didn’t measure up to its predecessor, it did fire off three successful singles–”Heartache Tonight,” “The Long Run” and “I Can’t Tell You Why”–and led to the farewell tour that resulted in 1980’s Eagles Live, 15 concert cuts (followed by a pair of holiday recordings) that close out the box set and the pre-reunion career of one of America’s most revered bands.

This limited-edition box contains the entire pre-reunion Eagles catalog on nine CDs.

Eagles (1972)
Desperado (1973)
On the Border (1974)
One of These Nights (1975)
Hotel California (1976)
The Long Run (1980)
Eagles Live (1980)

Bonus CD Single: Please Come Home for Christmas b/w Funky New Year (1978)

Blur – Blur 21: The Box (2012) [FLAC]
flac – lossless | 22.82 GB | Britpop

Blur 21 is a CD, DVD and vinyl box set encompassing the vast majority of music by Blur. It was released on 30 July 2012, commemorating the 21st anniversary of the release of Leisure, the band’s first album. The release took place before the band’s performance at Hyde Park as part of the 2012 Summer Olympics closing ceremony. The box-set consists of eighteen CDs, three DVDs, one vinyl 7″ record (of the early Seymour track “Superman”) and a hardcover book acting as a complete biography of the band. The CDs contain all seven Blur albums, with the first five remastered, with each album receiving a new second disc of B-side material; as well as four ‘rarities’ discs containing mostly previously unreleased material. The DVDs contain Showtime, The Singles Night and an all-new rarities disc. It is the band’s most retrospective release.

It is a hefty box. It is 18 CDs and three DVDs, adding up to 21 discs, which just happens to be the anniversary Blur are celebrating in 2012, a year when they’ve continued their halting reunion to headline the closing ceremony of the London Olympics. And, really, there was no other choice for such a prestigious gig. Other bands were bigger — archrivals Oasis handily eclipsed them in popularity and the Spice Girls soon brought Cool Brittania to an even greater audience — and Suede arguably kick-started the whole Brit-pop phenomenon, but Blur defined their era, reasserting the prominence of British pop music and then heading into uncharted waters. Blur 21 chronicles that journey in minute detail and, contrary to what its imposing size suggests, the box does not contain everything the group ever recorded. You’d have to be a pretty hardcore fan to notice how their terrible 1994 cover of the Who’s “Substitute” is MIA and even if you were that committed, chances are you’d rather have the four discs of unreleased rarities included here instead. These CDs — along with the DVDs, each capturing a separate live show from different stages of the band’s career beginning with the 1994 home video Showtime and ending with a 13-era live set augmented by videos that didn’t make the 2000 Best of Blur DVD — are exclusive to the box set but the double-disc expanded editions of the group’s seven albums are available separately. Each of these rounds up the non-LP B-sides from the accompanying album, leaving behind a few live cuts and remixes but containing all pertinent stray songs, many of which are excellent, particularly during the group’s mid-’90s prime.

What makes Blur 21 something more than just fan bait — although, make no mistake about it, there needs to be a certain level of dedication to get through a box of this size — is that there is an actual narrative told here, one that not only tells the story of Blur but represents the trajectory of British indie music in the ’90s. At the outset, Blur were a noisy, confused amalgam of droning psychedelia, C-86 pop, and Madchester dance, their various influences gaining focus on their 1993 second album, Modern Life Is Rubbish, designed by lead singer/songwriter Damon Albarn as a defiant response to the insurgent grunge from the U.S. For two albums — Parklife in 1994 and The Great Escape in 1995 — Blur perfected a classical British pop before returning to their art-school roots on their eponymous 1997 album, eventually embracing modern electronic cut-and-paste techniques on 1999′s 13 before splintering apart during the recording of 2003′s Think Tank. This journey is compelling and the added detail of rarities and B-sides deepens the experience, particularly during the early years when they were called Seymour and during the Brit-pop purple patch when they were making more good music than could fit on a single album. Naturally, at this length there are some failures or experiments gone awry — the early demos, such as an 11-minute “She’s So High,” are interesting but formless, and the concluding jams from 13 were meant to be spliced into shape by William Orbit, not heard at this length — but all the mess winds up illustrating Blur’s restless range and depth. There were plenty of other great British bands of the ’90s but none of their peers — Oasis, Suede, Pulp, Radiohead — covered as much stylistic ground or wound up with a catalog as rich as this ridiculously generous box set handily proves.

Generally considered the career breakthrough, and some would even say pinnacle, of the Allman Brothers‘ career, the 1971 concert album At Fillmore East was a huge success for the band.
A landmark of classic rock, At Fillmore East, recorded over several nights in March 1971, captured the live intensity and almost psychic group interplay between the bandmembers, largely centered on the guitar tête-à-tête of Duane Allman and Dickey Betts. Also integral to the Georgia band’s sound were the bluesy, soul-inflected vocals and organ playing of Gregg Allman, on whose shoulders much of the band’s future would rest after the tragic death of his brother Duane in a motorcycle accident in October 1971, a mere four days after At Fillmore East was certified gold.
However, despite the group’s undeniably innovative mix of rock, country, blues, and jazz, it was producer Tom Dowd who helped craft the live sessions into a remarkably kinetic and timely album. Dowd, who had previously helmed the group’s second album, 1970′s Idlewild South, skillfully edited the group’s various performances together, maximizing the best bits and, as in the case of “You Don’t Love Me,” combined the first section with the last section to form a concise, masterful take. The 2014 six-disc box set The 1971 Fillmore East Recordings brings together all of the unedited recordings the Allman Brothers made during their two-night, four-show stand at the Fillmore East. That means longtime fans get four versions of the band’s set opener, “Statesboro Blues,” as well as other cuts the group repeated each set. Thankfully, the Allman Brothers rarely played a song the same way twice, and every track here holds something surprising and unexpected to discover. Also included is the group’s June 1971 show closing out the Fillmore East for owner Bill Graham, who had decided to shut the venue down. Combine all of the music here, much previously unreleased, with John Lynskey’s heartfelt and informative liner notes detailing all of the concert drama, both on stage and off, and The 1971 Fillmore East Recordings ends up working as both a completist anthology and a joyful rock tribute.

When something is known in rock mythology as ‘The Doom Tour’, it’s a touch surprising that anyone would want to remember it 40 years on, never mind release a commemorative box set. But then Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s 1974 tour didn’t earn that epithet for any musical reasons.
It has become infamous in the years since due to the scale, excess and extravagance involved. Drugs, dodgy dealings and hangers-on surrounded CSNY, who were reconvening after a four-year break to cash in on their continued success by performing to what were then the biggest crowds ever seen at a rock concert. The particular circumstances which surrounded CSNY in 1974 are captured brilliantly in the accompanying series of oral recollections, which gives a sense not only…
of the huge scale the band were operating on but also how this time still plays a major part in their relationships today. It also contains some excellent anecdotes about Stephen Stills insulting some of the finest musicians in the world whilst off his face, which are always worth reading.

Forty years on, it seems that CSNY – and Graham Nash in particular – are keen to redress the balance, and show that away from all the shenanigans they still pulled off some great performances on this tour. The band regularly played for over four hours, with set lists drawing from the catalogues of all four songwriters, and were probably at the height of their powers in this set up, Neil Young’s idiosyncratic presence clashing with the sweet peace and love espoused by the others.

In order to prove that CSNY in 1974 wasn’t just a money-spinner, Nash has spent a long time in the producer’s chair, piecing together recordings fto create this lavish collection. It’s available as one single-disc live album, which pulls together 11 of the most famous CSNY tracks, but there’s much more interesting stuff in the full fat, director’s cut, extended edition box set. Forty tracks, plus a bonus DVD showing rare video footage dug up from the period, and a snazzy booklet, add up to a weighty piece of soft-rock archaeology.

Its aim is to present an idealised mirror of a show from the tour, and it certainly delivers in giving a sense of the scale of these CSNY performances. As the band go from electric to acoustic, dancing in and out of their songbooks before returning to their electric guitars for a stirring finish, it’s hard to not be impressed by the range they fire through. There are certainly moments where you feel the need to escape to the bar as another track extends into a lengthy jam, but if they wanted to capture the essence of a Seventies supergroup, that’s all part of the journey.

Nash in particular come across well, his contributions adding some light to the shade supplied by his counterparts. They might have become slightly cheesy ad staples today, but ‘Our House’ and ‘Teach Your Children’ have their bright-eyed optimism restored here, delicate harmonies adding touches of colour to Nash’s confident delivery. Of the rarities, Nash’s ‘Fieldworker’ is also one of the most interesting additions, a character study performed solo over pounding piano chords. ‘Military Madness’, from his underrated Songs For Beginners LP, also stands the test of time, a powerful autobiographical statement that avoids the more overt flower-power tinges that can taint the band elsewhere.

Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth – Mecca and the Soul Brother [2CD Deluxe Edition Remastered Box Set] (2010) [FLAC]
flac – lossless | 976 MB | Hip-Hop

Sony Music and Traffic Entertainment Group proudly present Mecca And The Soul Brother, the critically acclaimed 1992 debut album from the Mount Vernon duo, Pete Rock & CL Smooth. The album is considered as one of the greatest Hip Hop albums of all time. Boasting tracks such as the first single, “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)”, a dedication to their deceased friend; “Trouble T-Roy”, which went on to become not only their signature hit, but also one of Hip Hop’s all-time great songs. The album is propelled forward by Rock’s quick, soulful interludes; usually bits of old R&B tunes layered with his signature trumpet and sax loops. Smooth’s liquid freestyle delivery pieces together the perfect vocal match that, together, creates a sprawling, nearly 80-minute-long album on which not a single song or interlude is a throwaway or a superfluous piece. Named one of the essential recordings of the 90s by Rolling Stone, among numerous other accolades, Mecca and the Soul Brother stands up without ever really dating itself and is now available in a beautiful 2xCD box set edition.

The first disc features the original 16 album tracks, remastered from the original masters recordings. The second disc contains 15 bonus versions and exclusives. Both discs come housed in individual ‘paste on’ style sleeves with brightly-colored printed dust sleeves. A 20-page book features in-depth liner notes written by Brian Coleman with contributions from Dante Ross, Pete Rock and CL Smooth. All this plus a full sized poster to boot. Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth – The Main Ingredient [2CD Deluxe Edition Remastered Box Set] (2012) [FLAC]
flac – lossless | 905 MB | Hip-Hop

After the success of 2010’s deluxe reissue of Pete Rock & CL Smooth “Mecca and the Soul Brother”, Traffic Entertainment is proud to announce the release of Pete Rock and CL Smooth’s 1994 classic, “The Main Ingredient” in the same deluxe packaging and expanded content concept. The album never gained the traction as the pairings full length debut, which followed the 1991 EP “All Souled Out” and yielded the biggest hit of their conjoined career, “They Reminisce Over You.” But “The Main Ingredient” is nonetheless Pete and CL’s most critically applauded work, a definitive symbol of the tempered consciousness and roughneck rhythm that defined the era.
Pete Rock laid these backdrops in Rockland County, where he moved and built a studio after leaving Mount Vernon in 1993 (the cover shot for The Main Ingredient was taken in his Rockland lab).

Though the scenery changed, his tools of choice didn’t, and this is yet another testament to the Chocolate Boy Wonder’s magical knack with the SP-1200 drum machine and sampler. With no Pro Tools and little input from outside of their immediate camp, Pete and CL recorded their final sixteen as a team over the course of a year between 1993 and 1994. “This definitely marks a very high place in my career,” says Pete. “We were in a zone, and when you’re in a zone, it’s fun. It was a great time, and we put the album together with just that in mind. It was like a family thing, and music was a hobby, not a job. We kept it like we were in the basement, creating music just for the fun of it. Of course the business side reared its ugly head, and we eventually had to deal with that, but ’94 was a great time. Music was more real back then. It was more original”. Traffic Entertainment now captures that time in a box with this expanded deluxe edition of this seminal work.

The Legendary 2007 Live Concert Available For The First Time Ever!
On December 10, 2007, Led Zeppelin took the stage at London’s O2 Arena to headline a tribute concert for dear friend and Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun. What followed was a two-hour-plus tour de force of the band’s signature blues-infused rock ’n’ roll that instantly became part of the legend of Led Zeppelin. Founding members John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant were joined by Jason Bonham, the son of their late drummer John Bonham, to perform 16 songs from their celebrated catalog including landmark tracks “Whole Lotta Love,” “Rock And Roll,” “Kashmir,” and “Stairway To Heaven.”
A film of the show, “Celebration Day, is now available on DVD and includes the entire concert in HD video and in 5.1, 48/24 hi-resolution audio surround sound. “Celebration Day” is an incredible document of the now legendary concert, which has been described as possibly the greatest rock and roll concert ever. The two hour feature length film is presented in beautiful high definition video, and stunning audio quality. The aspect ratio is 16×9. The film is directed by Dick Carruthers who had previously worked with Led Zeppelin on their award winning 2003 release “DVD” – a release that remains one of the highest selling music DVD’s of all time. Year Of Release: 2014
Genre: Alternative
Format: FLAC, image+.cue+.log
Bitrate: lossless
Total Size: 2.67 GB

More than 15 years after its original release, the Smashing Pumpkins’ Adore, will be reissued as a Super Deluxe 6CD/1DVD set that features 107 tracks including rarities, demos and outtakes along with a complete 1998 live show video from Atlanta’s Fox Theater. Among the previously unreleased tracks is the never-before-available ‘Blissed and Gone’ which fans may recognize as the melody heard briefly as the final track on the original album. The Smashing Pumpkins’ Adore, the follow up to the band’s mega-successful 1995 double album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, offered a new entrance to the band’s career as Corgan experimented with and without the band.

This Super Deluxe package not only features the original album remastered and a mono version of the album, but includes a full booklet with liner notes by Rolling Stone writer David Wild. Capturing a transitional period in the Smashing Pumpkins’ history, Billy Corgan was glad to revisit the songs from this highly-personal album. Adore will also be available as a single CD, a double-LP and a 90-track digital deluxe.

Year Of Release: 2014
Genre: Downtempo, Electronic
Format: FLAC, tracks+.cue+.log
Bitrate: lossless
Total Size: 2.5 GB

Super Deluxe 5-CD Box Set with book containing memorabilia and newly created artwork by design collective tomato.
To celebrate Dubnobasswithmyheadman’s twentieth anniversary, the record has been meticulously remastered at Abbey Road for a deluxe reissue by the band’s Rick Smith. Revisiting the original MIDI files, Rick uncovered a wealth of previously unreleased material and rare alternate mixes that sit alongside the record’s original companion singles and remixes and offer a fascinating insight into the creation of the record. The resultant release is the definitive version of one of those rare records that truly deserves to be described as a classic.
Underworld’s debut arrived as a fully formed statement of intent. Its’ nine tracks showcased the limitless possibilities of electronic music. Although born out of club culture, Dubnobass… defied the accepted genres of the time – equally suited to the dancefloor and the after party, it was as immersive an experience quaking through bassbins or headphones. Two decades on from its original release, it’s unarguable that Dubnobasswithmyheadman is one of the most influential British electronic records of all time; a signpost for everything from dance music’s easy relationship with main stages at festivals to the radio/globe-conquering EDM phenomenon.
Other formats include Remastered 1CD; a 2CD Deluxe Edition; 2LP on 180 GM vinyl.

Rage Against The Machine – XX (20th Anniversary Special Edition) [2CD+DVD]

Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, will release Rage Against the Machine – XX, commemorative 20th anniversary editions of the eponymous debut album by a great American rock band, on Tuesday, November 27, 2012.

Originally released in November 1992, Rage Against the Machine signaled the arrival of a revolutionary musical force, a band straddling the worlds of hip-hop and heavy metal with a scorching streetwise sound that rapped and rhymed hardcore across a musical backdrop as menacing and inspirational as graffiti. Rage Against the Machine entered the popular lexicon as more than just a revolutionary American rock band, the group’s very name provided a rallying battle cry for the ongoing struggles for liberation–psychic and political–on planet earth.

Formed in 1991, Rage Against the Machine opened the gates of a new boundary-obliterating rock-rap musical alliance with the band’s literate and politically-charged debut album. Featuring band members Tim Commerford, Zack de la Rocha, Tom Morello and Brad Wilk, Rage Against the Machine became a critical and commercial success, selling millions of copies around the world while attaining legendary status among alt-rock fans. To this day the album, and the band, remain standard-bearers for uncompromising incendiary rock.

Newly remastered for this anniversary release, Rage Against the Machine – XX will be available as a CD in three configurations: 1) 20th Anniversary Edition Deluxe Box Set housing two CDs, two DVDs, one 12″ 180gm vinyl LP, one 40 page booklet and two-sided poster; 2) 20th Anniversary Special Edition featuring two CDs and a bonus DVD featuring six tracks in an oversized softpack and 3) 20th Anniversary Edition single compact disc (with three bonus tracks). 12″ 180gm vinyl editions–a picture disc and a facsimile reproduction–of the original LP, remastered (no bonus tracks) will also be available.

Compact Disc One of the newly remastered Rage Against the Machine – XX will include the original album, in its entirety, as well as three collectible b-sides from era.

Compact Disc Two presents the original Rage Against the Machine demo tape. Recorded in 1991 and sold for $5 at the merch table at early Rage shows, the tape achieved mythical word-of-mouth status amongst music fans while helping to seal the band’s deal with Epic Records. The 20th anniversary releases of Rage Against the Machine – XX marks the first time the entire RATM demo tapes have seen a full official release.

DVD #1 included in the Deluxe Box Set features Rage Against the Machine’s historic free concert in Finsbury Park on June 2010, performed as a thank-you to UK fans for making “Killing in the Name” the UK’s Number One Single during Christmas week 2009. Also included is the band’s groundbreaking music videos plus live concert performance clips.

DVD#2 takes you back to the release of Rage’s debut album focusing on live performance from 1991-1994 which features the full set of RATM’s first public performance as well as various live, rare clips.

Rage Against the Machine – XX will include new liner notes, penned especially for the band’s 20th anniversary by longtime fan and hip-hop pioneer Chuck D.

Funny how quickly some people can get written out of rock history.
British guitarist Robin Trower once commanded considerable column inches in rock magazines and encyclopedias of the Seventies and Eighties, but by the Nineties he wasn’t even appearing in most.
Yet, especially in the Seventies, people would seriously discuss him as having inherited Hendrix’s mantle, and albums like Twice Removed From Yesterday (in ’73) and Bridge of Sighs (’74) were on many discerning play-loud turntables.
He’d come into hard rock through the usual route of r’n’b in the Sixties (he’d been in bands called the Paramount and their offshoot the Jam) before playing on albums by former Paramount mates in their new group Procol Harum, although he didn’t actually play on their big hit Whiter Shade of Pale.
After five albums with them he formed a power band Jude in ’71 with singer Frankie Miller, former Jethro Tull drummer Clive Bunker and bassist Jim Dewar.
Over time they morphed into the Robin Trower Band and then with various changing line-ups albums simply appeared under his own name as he explored slower, more bluesy Hendrix-edged styles in a power trio.
Those two previously mentioned albums did well for him in the States (especially the latter) and his home country was rather slower to catch on, although For the Earth Below (’75) was a big seller on both sides of the Atlantic.
There was a live album recorded in Stockholm (they didn’t know it was being recorded he said later) and then the equally good Long Misty Days (’76) before punk arrived and largely put paid to guitar heroes of the Trower kind.
He subsequently worked with Cream bassist/singer Jack Bruce, had an on-again off-again relationship with Procol Harum, produced a few Bryan Ferry albums, kept recording (20th Century Blues in ’94 went somewhat overlooked) and . . .
And the real oil though is on those first four studio albums and the live set, all of which are in this tidy little package where you can hear his black-soul and blues spirit coupled with power rock.
These days it’s probably hard to get a conversation going about Robin Trower let alone one of those arguments about whether he was the equal of Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and so on.
If the idea of power trio rock is something that makes you want to kiss the sky then this package really comes highly recommended.
