This year’s celebration of Rush continues with the highly anticipated release of a remixed version of the band 2002′s album VAPOR TRAILS. In 2009, two tracks from VAPOR TRAILS ( One Little Victory and Earthshine ) were remixed for the Retrospective III collection, setting fans into a frenzy in anticipation of a possible remixed version of the entire album being released one day. Four years later, that day is finally approaching.
“Vapor Trails was an album made under difficult and emotional circumstances – sort of like Rush learning how to be Rush again – and as a result, mistakes were made that we have longed to correct. David Bottrill’s remixes have finally brought some justice and clarity to this deserving body of our work, says Geddy Lee.
“Every song has been given a new life, from the fire of One Little Victory, Secret Touch, and Ceiling Unlimited to the melodic musicality of Sweet Miracle and How It Is … these songs have been redeemed. Thank you David!”
The remixed version of VAPOR TRAILS will also be included in the new 7-disc boxed set THE STUDIO ALBUMS 1989-2007, which features every studio album Rush recorded for Atlantic Records. The collection includes the Gold & Platinum albums Presto (1989), Roll The Bones (1991), Counterparts (1993), and Test For Echo (1996), as well as their covers EP Feedback (2004) and the Billboard Top 5 album Snakes & Arrows (2007). THE STUDIO ALBUMS 1989-2007 features each album presented in a wallet sleeve that faithfully reproduces the original artwork (except for VAPOR TRAILS, which features a reinterpreted version of the original cover) and is available on October 1st from Atlantic/Rhino.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the release of The Waterboys? ?Fisherman?s Blues?, Mike Scott has trawled the vaults to create the ultimate companion to this seminal album. ?Fisherman?s Box? comprises the complete Fisherman?s Blues sessions23rd January 1986 to 2nd June 1988, across 6 CD?s. The edition will contain the 6 CDs of the sessions and a 64page 5×5 booklet containing the introduction and annotation with rare and unseen photographs.
Mike Scott had been pursuing his grandiose “big music” since he founded the Waterboys, so it came as a shock when he scaled back the group’s sound for the Irish and English folk of Fisherman’s Blues. Although the arena-rock influences have been toned down, Scott’s vision is no less sweeping or romantic, making even the simplest songs on Fisherman’s Blues feel like epics. Nevertheless, the album is the Waterboys’ warmest and most rewarding record, boasting a handful of fine songs (“And a Bang on the Ear,” the ominous “We Will Not Be Lovers,” “Has Anybody Here Seen Hank?,” and the title track), as well as a surprisingly successful cover of Van Morrison’s breathtaking “Sweet Thing.”
At last the long awaited box set has arrived. I have to declare it was well worth the wait. The whole package looks and sounds great.
The booklet starts with an essay by Decemberist, Colin Meloy paying homage to his favourite album. Then we have a track by track breakdown by Mike Scott himself. The three 12×12 prints are of fine quality and the 180g vinyl is great to have as my old copy is almost worn out.
The we have six cd’s of amazing music. All the tracks help to build a picture of the conflict inside Mike’s head as he tried to get his musical vision committed to tape.On evidence present here we could have had a folk/roots “Sandanista” all those years ago. At least three albums of high quality or maybe more are contained within these sessions.
I remember seeing The Waterboys playing Mike’s old stomping ground of Ayr on the original “Fisherman’s Blues” and it was a fantastic gig. Something magical was certainly happening then as you can hear on these discs.
The bonus cd “Fisherman’s Roots” is also a great addition to a perfect box set.

The bass has seen its share of extraordinary innovators in the hundred-plus years of jazz history. Stanley Clarke, much like such hallowed figures as Jimmy Blanton, Charles Mingus and Scott LaFaro, was a game changer on his instrument. Unlike those who came before him though, Clarke helped alter the nature of both the acoustic and electric configurations of the bass. His groundbreaking work of the 1970s has been so integrated into the very fabric of modern jazz bass playing that a return visit to his own brilliant recordings can be nothing less than a revelatory listening experience.

By the time he was in his early twenties, Clarke had already apprenticed in the bands of, among others, Horace Silver, Pharoah Sanders and Stan Getz; his phenomenal technique, rich tone and melodic phrasing galvanizing the acoustic bass into previously unheard territory. Uniting with keyboardist Chick Corea in the various editions of the Return To Forever band, Clarke began incorporating the electric bass into his arsenal. Blending funk-styled finger popping and virtuosic strumming techniques mated with his harmonic and compositional sophistication — Clarke alerted a new generation of fusion players to the instrument’s untapped potential.

Clarke’s own recordings of the time are ripe with superb playing from the leader and such illustrious fans as drummer Tony Williams, keyboardists Jan Hammer and George Duke, and guitarists Jeff Beck and John McLaughlin, just to name check guests from Clarke’s first two albums. With his third album, School Days, Clarke became a bonified jazz-funk hero: the greasy bass line of the title track remains a yardstick of groove playing; to this day, no self-respecting electric bassist dares not have it under his or her fingers.

Subsequent albums found the now revered bassist mixing rock, jazz, R&B and orchestral textures with comfort, originality and boldness. Make no mistake, each of these pioneering Clarke recordings can sit proudly alongside the fusion masterworks of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report and Return To Forever.

Here it is: eight CDs worth of John Coltrane’s classic quartet, comprised of bassist Jimmy Garrison, pianist McCoy Tyner, and drummer Elvin Jones, recorded between December of 1961 and September of 1965 when the artist followed his restless vision and expanded the band before assembling an entirely new one before his death. What transpired over the course of the eight albums and supplementary material used elsewhere is nothing short of a complete transfiguration of one band into another one, from a band that followed the leader into places unknown to one that inspired him and pushed him further. All of this transpired in the span of only three years.
The group that the saxophonist had assembled for Coltrane in 1962, a band that had been together a little while and had performed together at the Village Vanguard (the tracks that include the quartet without Eric Dolphy from Impressions are here, and, in fact, the first pieces on the set are from those session dates chronologically) in a variety of settings, is almost nothing like the band that made Kulu Se Mama in 1965.
For a change, the oft-employed yet irritating chronological method of compiling a box makes sense here. McCoy Tyner’s piano style, that rich open-ended modal chromaticism he developed was at work on “The Inchworm,” astonishingly enough the first work recorded in the 1962 studio dates. “Out of This World” was one of the last from that session that would produce the album Coltrane. The blues element that would disappear from later records — at least consciously — was the driving force behind ballads like “Soul Eyes” and “After the Rain.”
But it isn’t until the latter end of 1963 that we hear the band beginning to gel into the unit that would make A Love Supreme and create the tracks that would be assembled into First Meditations for Quartet. There are the two alternate takes of “Alabama,” and the soprano solo that is positively danced around by the rhythm section on “Dear Old Stockholm.” There is also the great schism in Coltrane, much that took place between the June 1964 session that produced “Crescent” (and its first version is on disc eight, which is full of supplementary and unreleased material) and the following December when A Love Supreme was recorded. Here is the hinges in the whole box, the questions that need to be resolved than that this box only begs more than answers: what happened to that tight conscripted modalism Coltrane had been working on in his official releases prior to that time period as many of them hold clues but never give away the entire picture.
What the box does in its voluminous way is set the record straight that there was no retrenchment in pursuant releases to A Love Supreme. There were softer moments on record, but the material in the can was far more adventurous recorded at about the same time, such as the “Suite” or “Transition” or “Dusk Dawn.” Disc eight is also a treat in that it contains seven “works in progress” from all periods in the quartet’s history. It begins with the aforementioned version of “Crescent,” which is appreciably different than the master take in Tyner’s solo particularly. There’s also an incomplete though steaming initial take of “Bessie’s Blues.” Perhaps the most beautiful thing on the final disc is the alternate take of part II of A Love Supreme’s “Resolution,” with its elongated obligato by Coltrane and Tyner’s gorgeous tenths playing ostinato during the saxophone solo. There’s an alternate of “Feelin’ Good” that’s no big deal, followed by breakdowns and alternate takes of both “Dear Lord” and “Living Space,” both of which reveal the harmonic development of a scale as it becomes the architectural model for the rest of the composition and improvisation. There can be no arguing the value of the originally released recordings; whether they were issued during Coltrane’s lifetime or after his death, they tell a story that millions of listeners formed their impressions by, true or false, and created a legacy that lives on. But there is also something to be said for setting the record straight, and the chronological approach that this set takes in no way desecrates the integrity of the original albums themselves — unlike the Ornette Coleman box. Simply put, it is indispensable to those who need a deeper understanding of Coltrane’s music and the development of his most influential period. The sound quality is fully remastered to 20-bit technology, and the package is unwieldy but beautiful and sturdy. It’s a must.

Gentle Giant – Memories of Old Days (5CD Box Set) (2013) [FLAC]

This is a 5 CD box set of Audience recorded bootleg material, studio try-outs, recording session instrumental sessions, rough demos and ‘some’ soundboard sourced live material.
After some exhaustive playing I can now write a review that will help any potential buyer.
The 1st CD mostly contains audience recordings, a few rough demos from 1975/1976. This disc is one of those you play once, nothing really stands out for me.
CD2 is a great rehearsal SBD from Pinewood 1977. Some Has been available on DVD, some great music.
CD3 has more studio tryouts and another concert with slightly better sound for an audience recording. Not that great.
CD4 is the BBC concert also available previously on DVD. Great show and sound. Not stereo it seems. Then a few rough demos thrown in at the end.
CD5 contains Gentle Giants final concert in audience recording sound and a few demos. This is a great show but has ordinary sound.
The problem I have with this set is the fact Progressive Music is meant to be heard in crisp ‘clear’ stereo sound to truly enjoy the complex musicianship, vocals and musical movements.
Hearing Gentle Giant like its recorded in a tin can does not give the full listening pleasure. This is why the vocals sound awful, the audience sound does little to help any vocal sound.
The demos are unlistenable and the studio session material is good but at times tedious.
If you are a Gentle Giant fanatic then you may get something out of this. I am a fan and have all their studio albums but these 5 CDs are mostly fragments of the brilliance. Most of it is not something you would put on and sit back to listen to. The package has been put together as a complete collection of what was available from 1975 to 1980 warts and all.

Directed by Gavin Elder, filmed live in Manchester at the MEN Arena on 16 December 2011. The Blu-ray includes bonus documentary material, produced by Gavin Elder and James Tonkin. The documentary covers the story of 2011. Band members talk candidly about the highs and lows of that year. The CD version was mixed by Snake Newton and mastered on 5 March 2012, at the Metropolis Studios in London

Held at a venue located in Manchester city center, this was the 10th of eleven arena shows performed in the UK during The All You Need Is Now Tour. A Diamond in the Mind is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Eagle Rock Entertainment with an AVC encoded 1080i transfer in 2.35:1. It has two lossless audio options, a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix and an LPCM 2.0 stereo fold down. Fidelity is superb in both of these tracks.

Though the American folk movement of the early ’60s would influence bands like the Byrds and Buffalo Springfield and a score of oh-so-sensitive ’70s singer-songwriters, its two most looming successes during the decade–Bob Dylan and Simon and Garfunkel–couldn’t have seemed more disparate. While Dylan turned hard-left, outraging many a folk purist by zealously embracing rootsy blues-rock and its electrified cacophony, S&G veered toward the center, equally infuriating snooty pundits by embracing a Top 40 pop sense whose ostensible shallowness often belied its rich musical diversity. In retrospect, Simon and Garfunkel’s career as a duo was remarkably brief (five albums in six years), if no less commercially potent (a slew of Top 40 singles, two Number One albums, and the requisite handful of Grammy Awards). This box set compiles digitally remastered versions of the original S&G albums, each expanded to include bonus tracks (mostly previously unissued demos with a few scattered outtakes, the quartet on Sounds of Silence the best of the lot) and a booklet featuring new notes for each album and song lyrics. It’s a rewarding journey, wending from the almost slavish folk devotion of Wednesday Morning 3 AM through the greeting-card iconoclasm of Sounds of Silence, the madrigal-pop of Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme to the increasingly impressionistic lyrical landscape of Bookends. It also covers the rich musical tapestry of Bridge over Troubled Waters, which foreshadowed Simon’s own diverse solo career by embracing everything from the Everlys and Jan & Dean to Andean folk and R&B. –Jerry McCulley

This box set contains 19 separate CD reproductions of the Clash’s original U.K. singles, in paper sleeves with the original single artwork. This might seem a tad ridiculous at first–after all, CDs can hold 80 minutes of music, right? But every possible B-side has been included–songs from 12- and 7-inches, many of those rare tracks only released in other countries–and some of the CDs have as many as eight tracks. One of the earliest (and strongest) criticisms of CD reissues has been the way in which they tend to divorce the listener from the context of original releases; obviously that’s not the case here. All of the group’s major single statements are here, from their earliest buzz saw manifestos to the latter experiments in dub.
